AGE Concern in Bolton is offering the elderly rthe chance to have their electric blanket tested for free.
Government statistics show that older people are six times more likely to die in a house fire caused by a faulty electric blanket. Blankets should be checked every three years but pensioners are often put off by the cost.
Sleep Warm but Sleep Safe is the message from Age Concern this winter and the charity is also offering money-off vouchers to replace failed blankets.
Neville Bumby, who co-ordinates the charity's Accident Prevention in the Home Service said: "Many older people use electric blankets for many years without realising they need to be tested for safety".
