POOR Vauxhall Motors. Just days after crashing out of the world's most famous cup competition they are forced back down to earth with a cup-tie of a very different nature tonight.
There is some magic associated with the UniBond League Cup - just ask Accrington Stanley, who won it last year - but it is nothing compared to the FA Cup.
The Motormen tasted glory when they disposed of second division QPR in the first round proper.
But their dream of meeting one of the Premiership big boys came to an end on Saturday in the second round when they limped out at the hands of Macclesfield, losing 2-0.
Now, instead of dreaming of meeting Manchester United at Old Trafford or Arsenal at Highbury, they are getting ready for tonight's UniBond League Cup tie at home to Chorley.
And the Magpies are hoping to do a bit of 'giant-killing' of their own.
The first division side beat Premier club Runcorn 3-1 in the last round and Magpies manager Mark Molyneaux would dearly love to take another Premier scalp and progress to the last eight.
And after the Motormen's disappointment on Saturday, tonight may be a good opportunity
But Molyneaux disagreed and said: "I don't think getting knocked out of the FA Cup will affect them tonight.
"I actually thought they should have done better at Macclesfield because they are a good footballing side and, after beating QPR, it was almost expected that they would beat Macclesfield as well.
"But it wasn't to be and they must play us tonight now and it depends on how good a side they put out.
"He may use the game as an exercise in bringing the kids through but I am certainly going to be playing my strongest side."
Even Chorley, in the earlier rounds of this competition, played weaker sides as 'Molly' rotated his large squad, but now it is getting more serious.
"I will play my strongest side tonight because it will be a good test to play against them, it will show where we are.
"I made a few changes last week when we beat Runcorn and it gave me a selection headache for Saturday's game, which was eventually called off anyway, because they played so well."
Lee Southwood, Phil Bayliss, Stuart Tullock, Ian Bold, Ian Barker and Dean Butterworth all got their chance and impressed - Butterworth scoring two goals - and some may keep their places for tonight.
