A BOLTON-based company has started work on a new £500,000 eco-friendly visitor centre.
Hargreaves Contracting has begun building the venue, set to become The Wildlife Trust's regional headquarters, in Cuerden Valley Park, near Bamber Bridge, Preston.
The visitor centre is being constructed from reclaimed bricks and materials and will feature eco-friendly designs, such as an economical and environmentally friendly wood-chip stove that uses timber collected from the park and grey water recycling, which will re-use rainwater collected on the roof for flushing the toilets.
The centre will also have offices and a classroom. The project is funded in partnership with Heritage Lottery Funding, Lancashire Tourism Partnership, Lancashire Environmental Fund, English Partnerships, DEFRA Countryside Stewardship and the Environment Agency.
Gerry Sweeney, managing director for Hargreaves Contracting, said: "We were extremely pleased to have been chosen to build the new visitor centre.
"Once complete the centre will provide an essential service to the 650 acre park which is already very popular with visitors, but most importantly it will provide a benchmark for others to follow in the future."
