A MOTHER is starting a road safety campaign after her son came within seconds of serious injury or even death outside their home.

Bradley Mills, aged 11, had just stepped over the threshold of their terraced house when a car ploughed into the garden wall.

A concrete pillar catapulted through the air and smashed into the front door -- just as he closed it on Wednesday.

Now Janice Mills plans to petition highway engineers about speed cameras and road humps on Bolton Road, Westhoughton.

She said: "My son could have died on his own doorstep. Something needs to be done quickly to stop someone being killed in a future accident."

Mrs Mills said there had been at least seven accidents on the road in the past 15 months.

Bradley, who goes to Westhoughton High School, arrived home at tea-time just seconds before a car smashed into the wall.

The driver, 19-year-old Darren Boyd of Park Road, is thought to have lost control of the vehicle at about 3.45pm. He was treated at the Royal Bolton Hospital for neck pain, cuts and bruises.

Westhoughton Town Council leader David Wilkinson said councillors had asked officers about road safety measures on that road last year.

He said: "There have been a spate of accidents on Bolton Road. It does need looking at. It's a narrow road with a number of bends and drivers are losing control.

"However it is a major road and we were told that installing traffic calming measures might prove impossible.

"Officers said they would try to look at a scheme for raising drivers' awareness of the dangers with signs or other measures."

A spokesman for Bolton Council said: "We understand Mrs Mills' concerns and we will consider the petition when we receive it."
