ST Helens coach Ian Millward has revealed he tried to entice Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson to swap codes.
Saints are due to take on the union rivals Sharks in a cross-code clash at Knowsley Road on 27 January.
And Millward has given the game an added edge by admitting he was keen to sign the England international.
There are some players I'd like to get on board for rugby league if possible
"I approached Charlie Hodgson 12 months ago. I think he would make an outstanding rugby league player.
"At the time I approached him he wasn't even on an England contract so I think things might have changed.
"He turned me down 12 months ago but it opened up opportunities for Sale to offer him another contract."
Millward added: "Sale have some tremendous international players and there are some players I'd like to get on board for rugby league if possible down the track."
