IN reply to R Taylor (Letters, January 13).
He says that his concern is that Lever Edge Lane/Smethurst Lane are to be "speed-humped".
I am a car owner and I am right behind Cllr Harkin. I live in Sapling Road, which is off Smethurst Lane, and, of course, gets most of the traffic that comes off Smethurst Lane. The roads mentioned are 22ft approximately in width, similar to the width of Fair Street, where Mr Taylor lives.
He says that Smethurst Lane is a well-used link road to the M61. This lane was never designed to be a link road to the motorway (I would like to see, especially commercial vehicles, made to use St Helens Road/Sapling Road to gain access to junction 4 of the motorway).
Drivers use Smethurst Lane/Sapling Road as a rat-run, many do not observe the speed limit.
All types of vehicles use the mentioned roads; commercials, yes, even very large articulated lorries. Those roads were never meant to be used by such vehicles. The sooner Smethurst Lane and Sapling Road get speed humps, the better.
