FOUR teenagers have been arrested in police swoops following a spate of burglaries and robberies in Westhoughton by raiders posing as officials.

In the latest incident, two men posing as police officers bundled a 79-year-old pensioner to the floor in his own home before stealing cash.

The man let them inside his sheltered accommodation home in Firs Avenue, Westhoughton, just after midnight after they told him they were investigating a robbery. The pensioner was left shocked but unhurt.

Police revealed conmen claiming to be either police officers or water and gas board workers have raided seven homes in Westhoughton in the past week, stealing cash and property.

Police fear the incidents are being carried out by an organised gang.

All the victims have been elderly men and women mainly aged over 60. Police say they are targeted because thieves believe they are easy prey.

Police chiefs described the four arrests as "highly significant."

They believe an organised gang have been operating in the area for the past week.

Paramedics were called to the scene after residents dialled 999 but the man -- who has not been named -- did not need hospital treatment.

Insp John Dunstan, of Astley Bridge Police, said: "The arrests came as part of our ongoing efforts to combat burglary and robbery across the division. More than 20 people have been arrested in the last two weeks in connection with a range of crimes.

"Our commitment to keep Bolton's streets and residents safe will continue."

All four men, aged in their late teens from Westhoughton, were held on suspicion of robbery and burglary.

Insp Dunstan added: "All genuine callers will have ID and people should never open their doors to anyone they feel unsure of. Safety must come first."
