Workers have spent months installing the all-weather floodlit pitch in the grounds of the Farnworth school, and yesterday it was "christened" with a special hockey match between members of Bolton Hockey Club.

A SPECTACULAR fire destroyed a four-storey mill early today, causing damage estimated at more than half a million pounds. Firemen from three counties fought the blaze as it raged through Dunlop's inflatable dinghy mill in Atherton Road, Hindley Green. At the height of the blaze, flames could be seen miles away, and the heat triggered coloured distress flares, packed inside the dinghies, firing them high in to the sky.

BOLTON cotton workers, and those at other mills throughout Lancashire, were shocked today to hear that the Industrial Disputes Tribunal had completely turned down their claim for a ten per cent increase on current wages. Cotton union leaders, whilst appreciating that the full 2s in the £ might not be secured, were expecting that the Tribunal would at least meet the claim in part. However, the Tribunal said today that "we find that the claim has not at present been established and award accordingly."

THE smallpox epidemic in Bolton has now assumed a serious aspect, and the loyal co-operation of the public and medical men with Dr Gould and his staff is absolutely essential if the disease is to be grappled with before developing serious consequences.
The latest case is that of an unvaccinated child three years of age which was discovered in the vicinity of Chorley Old-rd. showing spots on his face. The little sufferer was removed to the smallpox Hospital, where it now remains under the care of the Medical Officer.
A married woman in Morris Green also has smallpox. Dr Gould has issued this warning: "It is the duty of the householder, as well as the medical man in attendance, to notify the Medical Officer of Health. I should be glad when there is no medical man in attendance, if the household would notify me of any case of a person suffering from spots on the face, where there is any suspicion of smallpox, as several cases have occurred recently of people being kept at home while suffering from this disease."
