BOLTON School Girls' Division gained the best GCSE results in the borough.
And it was also ranked 123rd best-performing school in the country. Of the 120 girls who took the exams last year, 99 per cent gained five or more Grades A* to C.
The Boys' Division of the school came second in the Bolton table, with 96 per cent of the 139 pupils who sat the exams gaining five or more Grades A* to C.
Head of the Girls' Division Jane Panton, said: "We are lucky in that we do select students, but the girls and the staff really do work very hard. The girls do put in the extra effort."
Miss Panton said that between the two divisions of the school, there was friendly rivalry over who managed to score most highly in the tables.
Mervyn Brooker, head of the Boys' Division, said the school was not only an excellent academic school, but it also gave a broad range of education in other areas such as drama and music.
