HANDS up who doesn't think they are the funniest thing since Monty Python's Dead Parrot sketch after a few beers down the local?

Alas, most of us are more Peter Purves than Peter Kay, but in every town or city there lies some latent comedic talent just waiting to be recognised. Now new collective Bolton Comedy Zone (BCZ) is on a mission to locate Bolton's funnybone.

BCZ is a group of stand up comedians from the North-west, headed by Dave Purdy, compere at Manchester's Comedy Balloon. After hearing more than once that Bolton was in need of a comedy night, and encouraged by the rapturous reception to Peter Kay's down-to-earth material, BCZ began a search for new comic talent in Bolton late last year.

He explained: "We held our first event at The Alma Inn in December and it packed out before 8pm.

"We ended up having to lock the doors, leaving many disappointed fans outside. A recent extension to the performance area should ensure that's not repeated. Bolton has a long history of success in all areas of the performing arts, and I know the talent is out there."

BCZ has a policy of mixing established stand ups with new talent, which means that while newcomers get to try out their budding comedy skills the audience can be sure of a rewarding evening.

All comedians are expected to perform original material and, needless to say, anything sexist or racist is definitely out.

On Wednesday MC Dave Purdy will introduce headliner Des Sharples, promoter of Chorlton's Mirth On Monday comedy night, with strong support from Liverpool comedy-impressionist Mark Langley, Frog & Bucket regular Rob Riley, and Bolton's very own gagmeisters Swob and Richard Davenport.

So if you think you are funnier than a shed-load of Steve Coogans then get down to The Alma on Wednesday or call Dave Purdy on 07986 643339. Or if you'd rather be the heckler than the hecklee then turn up at 8pm to check out what belly laughs Bolton has to offer.
