ON the afternoon of Monday, January 20, I was crossing Victoria Square and, as trained from childhood by my sailor father, I turned to stand before the War Memorial and so acknowledge those who gave their lives for our freedom.
As my eyes fell on the flower grid, I was shocked to see it bare, not a wreath or a flower as a tribute to the fallen, when the town was celebrating 750 years of its Charter. Surely the planners of these celebrations could have found time and opportunity to pay tribute to those who have given their lives for the freedom they now enjoy, going back to the War of the Roses and beyond? Please do not let such omission occur again.
To mark the 750th anniversary, why not petition Parliament and thus the Queen for Bolton to return to its old name of Bolton-le-Moors, so distinguishing it from the other Bolton in the country. At the same time it could be returned to Lancashire where it belongs.
