THE Bollywood craze that swept through Britain during last summer hit Sharples primary school when pupils were given lessons in Indian dancing.
Actress Rhaki Sood, who has starred in The Bill and Casualty, put the children through their paces when she taught them a number of classical and modern moves seen in top Bollywood movies.
Rhaki said: "We teach the children traditional Bhangra dance moves. We involve children from all cultures and I think it is a great point for exploring Indian culture. It is growing more popular and is an easy way to keep fit."
Pupil Chris Tattersall, aged 11, said: "This is the first time we have ever done anything like this. I liked the hip hop moves."
Emily Grundy, aged 10, said: "I have done dancing before, but not like this. It is much better than work."
Head teacher Gaye Gerrard was also thrilled the school had become one of the first in the area to have the lessons.
She said: "We are just delighted to have the classes here. The children have been looking forward to them for a while. It is a new experience for most of our children and I am sure they will benefit from it."
The scheme is part of a 20-date tour led by "the UK's Bollywood Ambassador," Honey Kalaria, who starred in many Indian films and has worked with Ali G and music group Soul to Soul.
It has the backing of Tessa Blackstone, Minister of State for the Arts, who hopes to stimulate enthusiasm from children and encourage them to learn more about Indian culture.
