KEARSLEY Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year by creating a "new generation" of performers with its own youth theatre group.

The aim is to say "thank you" to the community who have supported the society's musical productions throughout its 50 years, and to respond to demand.

Last year the group performed Oliver and received 64 applications from children who wanted to take part. Only 20 were able to fit on stage so the idea was formed to create a youth theatre group.

The idea is to provide every form of theatre craft to the youngsters with the help of professional tutors, and a resident staff of six experienced volunteers. As a result, the children have recently produced Jack, the musical, to an audience of 140 parents and friends.

And in keeping with the society's strong support for young talent, it has secured the services of one of the youngest musical directors in the country, 16-year-old Christopher Hobson.

Christopher is a talented young musician from Cheetham's School of music in Manchester. He recently won the Youth in Community award from Soroptimist International. The Society's next show is Half A Sixpence which will be staged in April. Margaret Lever, society chairman, said: "We are a very happy and versatile group and we intend to enjoy another 50 years with modern, innovative and fun ideas.

"If any member of the Bolton public who can sing, act, dance, paint or do anything to help us in shows, we are waiting to welcome them.

"Also, we want to say thanks to the Bolton people for your 50 years support of shows and also fundraising activities for local charities with our Showsingers group and our concerts. Our television appearances may also be remembered by many.

"We urge people to do come and join us, especially if you do not already belong to another society."
