BUS stops in Bolton are to be upgraded to display the name of the stop and destination of services as well as the bus numbers.
Over the years, many bus stops have come to be known by names derived from the nearest side road or landmark, but most only display the bus service numbers.
Greater Manchester Transport Authority has allocated £350,000 for the work, which will be undertaken over the next five years. The scheme will initially tackle the identification of all bus stops and store them in a database.
Cllr Andrew Fender, chairman of the authority's policy committee, said: "We are working hard to make sure that information is as helpful and readily available to passengers as possible.
"Naming bus stops may seem like a small undertaking but it is useful. Passengers tell us they find this extra information useful and it is a major benefit to people unfamiliar with an area."
