BOLTONIANS are not the most miserable people in Britain -- despite claims that they are among the most glum people around.
Researchers at chocolate firm Cadbury's said that North-western folk were the unhappiest in the UK.
But a snap survey by the Bolton Evening News has revealed a very different story today -- we're actually the most joyful of souls.
Former grave-digger Joe Derbyshire, aged 79, said: "Bolton people really are the salt of the earth.
"Those researchers need to come here to see how cheerful we really are."
Gilnow resident Mr Derbyshire was among a group of Boltonians who challenged researchers to visit the home town of world-famous funnyman Peter Kay.
Mother-of-two Karen Horrocks, aged 35, of Tonge Fold, said: "When people say we're miserable it just makes me laugh. The only thing I get miserable about is a bad hair day.
"But I love living in Bolton. I'm really happy. It's great."
Her views were echoed by 89-year-old former mill worker Winifred Coyle, of Blackrod.
The pensioner, who has eight children, thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, said: "I'm not unhappy at all.
"We're all quite pleasant people in the North-west."
And unemployed 19-year-old Guy Platt, of Halliwell, said: "We're not miserable at all. There are plenty of reasons to be cheerful. Bolton's a great place."
The Cadbury's researchers asked people across Britain whether they were happy.
They found that those living in the North-west region were less happy than those in London. They found that the top five happiness boosters were friends, family, food, time off work and relaxing.
Guy's mother, Toni, who lives in Horwich, said: "Family celebrations are the best.
"We really know how to put on a good bash in the North-west."
Two girls who also know how to stay cheerful are Great Lever 16-year-olds Keshia Seaton and Vicky Walker.
Keshia, who is studying to be a beauty consultant at Bolton Community College, said: "People should come to town before trying to say we're all miserable.
"It's not a bad place. But I would love to have lots of money to buy a big house with a swimming pool."
Her fellow beauty student Vicky said: "I can't speak for other people but I know I'm a happy person.
"I love spending time in Bolton with my friends."
