THE group which owns Bolton's Deansgate store Whitakers says it has grounds for cautious optimism after a good New Year.

Bournemouth-based Beale plc has announced preliminary results for the 12 months up to November 2.

Operating profit is down 30.7 per cent to £2.68 million, due partly to costs of company restructing and integrating newly-bought stores into the group.

During the year, Beales bought Bentalls stores in Worthing, Ealing and Tonbridge.

Turnover was up 13.5 per cent to £88.64million compared with £78.05m in 2001. The dividend was up to 6.1p from 5.75p.

James Sexton, chairman of Beales, said: "Like for like, trading in the current financial year started slowly, with sales in November and December falling below last year's level.

"However, business improved in the first part of January, which gives hope for cautious optimism.

"Also, the acquisitions are settling down well and are expected to make a significant contribution to Group profits this year."
