A CAMPAIGN to reopen police cells in Chorley could be heading for the House of Commons.
Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle said he is aiming for a debate in the Commons to seek government support for his proposals.
Police chiefs took the decision not to upgrade the cells on health and safety grounds and they were closed.
Mr Hoyle is unhappy that police continue to travel to Leyland or Skelmersdale to use cells there after making arrests in Chorley.
Mr Hoyle said: "For each arrest two officers are taken off the streets leaving a greater opportunity for criminal activity or disorderly behaviour.
"I have raised this matter with the police chiefs on a number of occasions and they have stated that they will not improve the cells.
"I am now pressing for debate in the House of Commons on this matter in order to see what guidance and support the Government can provide to ensure the cells in Chorley are brought up to the necessary standards which will ensure that the police spend more time patrolling the streets and tackling crime."
