I AM concerned over the growing practices of our cyclists, particularly young people travelling on our roads without adequate lighting to the front and rear of their cycles.
Many do not wear protective head gear, or suitable clothing, and some cyclists weave between the traffic and ignore traffic signs and signals completely and even ride on the pavement, endangering pedestrians.
Many roads in Bolton have been reduced in width to provide cycle lanes, but surely this is only the first step towards providing safer roads for cyclists? We allow inexperienced young people to travel on the highways without any formal training, on roads which are dangerous for the most experienced driver. How many people have to be killed or injured on our roads before we introduce formal testing and licences with fines for those who flaunt the law?
During a recent visit to a town centre "pound" shop, I noticed that a complete cycle lighting system can be purchased for a total outlay of £2 including batteries; the cost of a meal in a fast-food restaurant. A small price to pay for life.
