At first the club denied having paid for the De Vere Whites Hotel and dismissed it as not being one of the factors as to why we had no money to spend. They then admit that they had put money into the building of the hotel but it would pay for itself in three years' time. Well, where're the profits now? If it's not doing the business they expected, surely the forward planning had been overlooked and it was an unnecessary monetary gamble, especially after the debacle of selling Burnden.
Secondly, the so-called £30m in debt. Fair enough, we are paying far more in wages than we ever have, but why are we still in the same debt that we were three years ago after receiving around £29m from SKY for getting promoted and staying in the Premiership? What has happened to this money and the money from the Reebok sponsorship, etc?
My sympathy goes out to Sam who seems to be fighting a losing battle trying to turn the club around against the lack of support from the board. He's made to cut his squad to fund new signings, then only has the money for one new player. Surely losing 3/4 players to be replaced by one is bad business and a sure-fire way towards relegation?
C'mon, Mr Gartside, it's about time the fans were told the truth about the club and that the board give Sam the financial backing he needs to stay in the Premiership. To keep a high income we need to be in the Premiership, and to stay in the Premiership we have to spend now. I understand the club doesn't want to be in further financial trouble, but if we did spend on new signings and did get relegated, the fans would understand the sale of the better players to help the financial footing. But to go down on the cheap is a disgrace.
Remember, for the fans it's about watching their beloved Bolton play at the highest level, not to see us scrimp and save and be happy being a mediocre yo-yo club.
