ANXIOUS Labour MP Brian Iddon has sent a letter to the Prime Minister urging him to produce clear evidence that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.
Dr Iddon says he is finding it difficult to speak up for Tony Blair in the absence of the discovery of a "smoking gun" in Iraq.
He wants Britain to guide United Nations inspectors towards the sites where the Government believes Saddam Hussein is holding his weapons of mass destruction..
In his two-page letter to Mr Blair, the MP writes: "The majority of people that I discuss this issue with would not like to support a war on Iraq unless some clear evidence can be produced that Saddam Hussein possesses such weapons."
Dr Iddon wants a full House of Commons debate on the issue. He said: "The debate appears to hinge on whether or not Sadam possesses weapons of mass destruction, which he promised to rid his country of following the last Gulf conflict. Obviously, the weapons inspectors that are in Iraq have, as yet, seen no evidence of a 'smoking gun'."
"The evidence produced up to now has not been enough to convince most people, including myself, that there is justification for a war on Iraq. Most people would be glad to see the back of the Iraq's dictator, of course."
In his letter, he also expresses his support for the Palestinians who he says are 'some of the most oppressed people in the world," slamming the Israeli government as "one of the worst we have seen."
Although he condemns Palestinian suicide bombers, he expresses to Blair his desire for two States existing side-by-side.
He says in his letter to Tony Blair: "I am respectful of what you are trying to achieve and I have argued in my constituency that you have been a restraining influence on the Bush administration.
"That is difficult for many of my constituents to accept."
