A 15-metre telecom mast is to be built on a farm to improve police radio signals in Egerton.
There is already a phone mast at Smith Fold Farm, Longworth Lane, but now planning chiefs in Bolton have said a second one can be built nearby because it is for the emergency services.
Councillor Norman Critchley told a planning meeting in Bolton: "This mast is essential to the emergency services, but it is still a difficult decision. If the emergency services need it, then it's better to have it here than near people's homes."
An 18.5 metre mobile phone mast is also to be built at Tonge Moor Cricket Club, off Crompton Way.
Members of the planning committee said the existing 17.6 metre tower at the ground will be pulled down.
