TEENAGER Alex Smith became one of the youngest British soldiers preparing for war when he flew out to the Gulf.
The 18-year-old marine from Breightmet could go into battle less than a year after he completed his 12-month training course. He flew from Brize Norton yesterday.
After passing out recently, he joined 42 Commando which is being stationed in the Gulf during the current crisis.
Alex, a former Withins School pupil, will be following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Tom Watson, who fought in the Army during the Second World War.
Mr Watson said he was proud of his grandson, who he described as a "strong lad", but he admitted: "Of course we are apprehensive over what is about to happen in the Middle East. I guess it's something that needs to be done."
His parents, mother Jean, stepfather Billy, and grandparents, Tom and Mary, say they will be glued to the news channels over the coming weeks.
Mr Watson said: "He's wanted a military career since he was 13 and we've supported him all the way."
