Hank' Aaron was born. In 1974 he bettered Babe Ruth's 40-year-old record of 714 home runs in major league baseball. He ended his career with 755.
1974: Football League attendances hit a new low when only 450 people watched Rochdale's Fourth Division match against Cambridge at Spotland.
2002: Former England boss Graham Taylor was appointed manager of Aston Villa for the second time after being persuaded to take over team affairs following John Gregory's departure.
