POLICE today issued safety advice to motorists over the cold snap. Police said motorists should;
Check wiper blades for cracks and defects caused by grit.
Use the correct wiper washer fluid for the winter temperatures.
Check tyre condition, tread, pressure and the spare wheel.
Lights and mirrors should work correctly.
Check oil levels and antifreeze.
Police are also asking the public to listen to weather warnings. A spokesman added: "Put some warm winter clothing, a spade and a torch in the car if you are likely to encounter bad winter conditions.
"On Pennine roads and motorways conditions can soon deteriorate, so be prepared. Motorists driving without clear views are committing an offence. It is dangerous."
On icy or slushy roads, motorists are advised to use high gears to avoid wheel spin and avoid harsh braking and acceleration.
