CHILDREN have been invited to play a part in restoring a reprieved bandstand in Walkden to its former glory.
Councillors voted unanimously to save Parr Fold Bandstand from demolition.
Salford Council wanted to close it after it had fallen into disrepair following vandalism and neglect.
But councillors voted to spend £4,000 repairing the structure, which was built in 1925 and is one of only two still standing in the whole of Salford.
Walkden South councillor Stan Witkowski, who campaigned to save it, said the exact costs were being drawn up. He said: "We want to get children involved in the project as it is their bandstand as well." It is estimated that £2,500 will be needed to repair the bandstand itself with another £1,500 to paint the ceiling and the floor."
A completion deadline had been pencilled in for July.
Local companies are being approached to help out although extra cash might be needed after vandals ripped iron panels from the side of the bandstand.
Children may be asked to design any new ironwork.
Cllr Witkowski is also hoping to reform the Friends of Parr Fold Park to co-ordinate the work.
He said: "Hopefully we will have it ready for the festival next July. It would be nice to have an official launch with a big brass band."
