THESE photos from the fifties depict various winter snow scenes.
Top - Walker Fold Road, Bolton, January, 1954. In 1958 I was doing National Service in the RAF in Cyprus, and recall seeing on the front page pictures of a blocked Blackrod by-pass on the papers flown out from Britain. They made me feel quite at home!
Bottom -Blackrod by-pass in 1958, completely blocked by snow, and middle right, another view of the by-pass.
Middle left - a rotary snow shifter which arrived in Bolton in December 1955 for a trial. Inspecting the machine were Ald. Dunning (chairman of the Cleansing Committee), and Mr J. Lewis (engineer).
