SURPRISE hit of the week has to be Tatu, who have shot to number one in the Smash Hits Buzz chart.
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I though that the girls' sultry video might catch the nation's attention...
Well it seems that a controversial video really is the best accessory of 2003. These days, when everyone has access to MTV and other such music channels, videos are even more important than ever and judging from recent efforts, including Christina Aguilera's Dirrty, sex really sells.
Tatu's video, which you must have seen by now unless you've been living in a cave, has the essential ingredients of a contoversy (schoolgirls, lesbians and snogging in the rain).
Yeah, it's a catchy song, but if the video hasn't had a great deal to do with its chart position I'll eat my headphones. It will be interesting to see whether this starts a spate of controversial videos in the next few months. Watch this space.
Other acts to watch are JayZ and Beyonce with their single Bonnie and Clyde. This is a track off JayZ's hip hop album, The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse which features other hip hop and R'n'B stars such as Faith Evans and Notorious BIG.
Another star to keep your eye on is Harlem-based rapper Cam'Ron, whose new single Hey Ma, which samples The Commodores song Easy, was released at the end of last month.
On the pop side of things, Appleton release their debut album Everything's Eventual this month. Big things are expected following the first couple of singles and the sisters will no doubt be hoping that All Saints' success in the charts can be repeated now they've gone it alone. We shall see...
In the meantime keep listening to the Smash Hits Buzz on Saturdays to find out who comes out on top. Will Tatu hold on to their number one for another week? I suppose it depends on the strength of enthusiasm for that video!
