A GREEK woman whose distinctive brand of opera has become a regular feature in Bolton town centre will be staging a one-woman show at The Lowry tonight (Friday) and on Tuesday.
Marika Klambatsea, of Heaton, became a familiar face in the town centre when she started belting out a mixture of opera and tragi-comic parody to shoppers.
Now the singer, who moved to Bolton in 1997, is set to showcase her own shows in two evenings of music and entertainment at The Lowry in February.
Marika has been singing professionally for more than 20 years. In addition to giving singing and piano lessons, she still performs on a regularly basis, particularly in Greece for brief periods.
The shows set to take to The Lowry stage are her own work. Calamity Jane -- Letters To Her Daughter (1877-1902) features Marika's composition. It mixes jazz, rock and opera, and is a one woman show. It won a music prize in Greece, and will be shown on February 8.
Her second composition is set to the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In collaboration with the well known Greek actor and director George Konstas, Marika examines the seven destructive passions behind Mr Hyde's two contrasting personas. The show takes place on February 11.
Marika said: "I try to make my music as accessible as possible. I want to reach out to as many people as I can."
Tickets for the shows are £10 or £8 concession from The Lowry press office on 0161 876 2000.
