WITH regard to the recent correspondence from Mr Peter Inch (February 2) I would like to say that I wholeheartedly agree with him.

I am not only embarrassed by, but I am ashamed of, the anti-American sentiments expressed by my former countrymen. I have no idea where this hatred of America and American people comes from. As Mr Inch points out, no super power always does everything which is beyond criticism, but America has been a saviour to more than one country in the world.

Americans do not blindly follow their leadership. They often disagree with decisions made by their government, and because they live in a country founded on a person's right to freedom of speech, they often voice that disagreement. Americans are fiercely patriotic. They may disagree but, when the chips are down, they come together as a people and as a nation and God help anyone who threatens that.

America gives billions in food and medical aide to many countries every year. They are one of the first responders in any disaster anywhere in the world. The people are generous beyond belief in their efforts to raise money, buy books, collect clothing and supplies, to volunteer not just in this country, but all over the world. American doctors travel worldwide to bring their expertise and technology to poorer nations, often performing much needed surgeries free of charge.

To all those people who are so sure they know America and its people and hate them, I say this, the world is a much better place with America and its people in it!
