AN ARMED mob launched a vicious attack on doormen at a Leigh nightclub because of a grievance over an earlier incident, a court heard.

Eight to 10 men carried out the attack at Barbarellas nightclub, in King Street.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that some were armed with bottles and others brandished weapons including coshes or iron bars, a screwdriver and a knife.

Prosecutor Timothy Brennand told the court that the victims included off-duty doorman Anthony James, who had gone along to the club to offer moral support to colleagues who feared trouble.

It is alleged that Mr James was attacked by Christian Henry, who is accused of wounding with intent and violent disorder.

Henry, aged 27, of Larch Road, Leigh, has denied both charges.

Three other Leigh men -- Ian Rawson, aged 32, of Willow Crescent; David Higgins, aged 30, of Tennyson Avenue and 21-year-old Christopher Pemberton of Liza Street -- have already pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
