Smithills School plans to convert an old gym into a modern performing arts centre now the secondary has specialist status in performing arts.
The centre will have hi-tech light and sound facilities and a mirrored wall in the dance area. It will be used in the day and at night.
As well as being a valuable resource for the Smithills school, the centre will also be accessible to community groups.
There are also plans for a recording studio, and more dance and music teachers are to be recruited with the extra funds. Headteacher John Lawson said: "This really is a fantastic opportunity. My previous school specialised in technology so I know about the benefits specialist status can bring."
The school decided to bid for specialism in performing arts because they have already had a considerable degree of success in the area.
The Smithills School Brass Band has been crowned world champions and they are already very strong in drama and dance. While preparing their bid for specialist status the secondary even attracted £25,000 in sponsorship from record company EMI's charity, Music Sound Foundation, after representatives from the organisation watched Smithills students perform.
As a specialist school, Smithills will improve performing arts facilities and resources for partner schools and the surrounding community. The school also expects to develop links with Asian dance groups and hopes to have a community festival each year.
