THE fight against burglary in Westhoughton has been given a £1,000 boost.

The money has been given to police by Westhoughton Town Council to be used to launch a successful system of property security marking -- using acid.

"Selectamark" kits are to be distributed across Westhoughton's Home Watch schemes allowing members to personalise their property inside their homes.

More than 50 schemes across the area are expected to benefit from the cash boost. The kits use a special form of acid to print security codes on to property through stencils. Police hope the scheme will serve to deter burglars -- and allow them to return stolen property to its owners quicker.

Chris Waters, Astley Bridge Police's Crime Reduction Advisor, said: "Statistics show that where this marking is used there is a dramatic reduction in crime.

"This is great news for the people of Westhoughton. It will also allow us to return any property that is stolen to its rightful owners. It will help to deter crime."
