I FULLY agree with the comments raised by John A Turner (Bolton Evening News, Thursday, February 6). The provision of speed humps do cause drivers to slow down at the hump, but speed up between them. And the focus of attention on approaching them distracts drivers from looking at other hazards.
I would also suggest that the use of speed cameras on St Peter's Way have a similar effect of traffic speeding between the cameras and slowing only for the cameras. The police have obviously not got the resources to set up further speed checks on the road. An obvious choice would be the introduction of smart cameras that record the passing of vehicles between two points and can calculate the average speed of the vehicle between them, or the use of cameras that point towards the potential speeding vehicles, so that the vehicle can be observed before the driver simply slows down, because they see the camera or road markings, or know they are there.
I agree that a 20mph speed limit is desirable in areas that are likely to have children playing in the road, but doubt the need for speed humps to have been installed on a bus route that has a service due every eight minutes, as is the case on Montserrat Road; this usually means a bus passing in one direction or the other approximately every four minutes, and children rarely play on this road.
