SOME of the poorest people in the region use candles instead of light bulbs and keep a reserve of rubbish to burn in the fire, research has revealed.

The National Consumer Council study among low income people in Liverpool also highlights the difficulties they face getting access to basic services.

Some single people were living on £107 per week, with some couples on £257.

The council said the needs of the poorest must be prioritised by both private and public bodies.
