VITAL maintenance work at Entwistle reservoir in Turton could force the beauty spot to be closed for walkers for up to two months.
Water firm United Utilities is to shut the south-east embankment while contractors work on the site from Monday.
It will also lead to the closure of Batridge Road, in Turton.
Walkers, including John Walton, a pensioner from Doffcocker, are concerned that their pastime will be disrupted. Mr Walton said: "It's a shame if it is completely closed because it's used by so many people.
"It's an easy flat route to walk. I've been doing it all my life."
Bosses at United Utilities say they are keen to keep disruption to a minimum. A spokesman said: "We have to close it for health and safety reasons but we're looking for an alternative route for walkers.
"We've set aside a statutory period of six months for the work but we hope to complete it within eight weeks."
