AFTER a career in top flight politics there is nothing better than enjoying all the benefits of retirement, including gentle afternoon strolls in the park.
And that is exactly what Lucy, David Blunkett's former guide dog is able to do now that she has given up the rat race. The curly-coated retriever cross has been replaced by her half sister Sadie who has now settled into her new life at the House of Commons. Both were trained at local branch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in Lowndes Street, Heaton.
And now 10-year-old Lucy is enjoying a well earned rest and an abundance of dog biscuits after being the Home Secretary's faithful companion for eight years.
Lucy is now staying with her new owner, Val Woolrich, in Bolton.
Mrs Woolrich said: "Lucy has settled in really well and we've been out for walks. St James' Park is very different to Moss Bank Park, but she seem to be coping well."
Her day now involves leisurely walks across Rivington, as well as spending time in the office. She has also made friends with a terrier called Barney.
"She still enjoys the travelling aspect of her working life with me," said Mrs Woolrich, "I am often out in the car or walking to and from places. She's always busy and loves to meet people."
Sadie, aged two, has now started her full time employment with Mr Blunkett after completing complex training around the streets of the capital and the buildings used by the Home Secretary.
