YORKSHIRE looks to Lancashire for inspiration in its next production. The West Yorkshire Playhouse, based in Leeds, presents The Accrington Pals from February 21 to March 29.
In 1916, Accrington suffered the devastating loss of more than 200 young men in the Battle of the Somme.
This play shows how the tragic consequences of the Great War were absorbed by the town's close knit and largely female community.
Accrington was the smallest town in Britain to raise a battalion -- affectionately known as The Pals -- to fight in the First World War.
More than 1,000 men enlisted in 10 days. In less than 20 minutes, during the Battle of the Somme, more than half of them died or were wounded.
