Q: I worry whether my children are consuming enough vitamins, do you think supplements are the best way to ensure they get all their vitamins.
A: If you children eat a well-balanced and varied diet there should be no need for supplements. Five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables are needed daily along with calcium, protein, carbohydrate and a small amount of fat. Try writing down and record their diet for a week and looking at exactly what they eat and if any improvements could be made. A guide to healthy eating can be obtained from your local health centre. Multi-vitamin tablets are available for children but should not be taken to replace foods.
