Q: I have two glass decanters with what looks like hand-painted scenes on them in white. I inherited them many years ago but don't know anything about them.
Mrs L
A: These are Victorian decanters, probably made between 1850 and 1880, and decorated with white enamel. The technique was very fashionable during that period, and items made included jugs and vases, as well as decanters. Various scenes were used to embellish the items, often featuring children, and the range was known as "Mary Gregory Glass", even though there is no evidence that anyone called Mary Gregory created the process! Values vary depending on style and decoration but these decanters would be worth about £200 the pair.
