Q: Can you tell me the value of a picnic set I have in a small green fitted case. It is made by a company called Sirram and is complete with tin boxes for sandwiches, two flasks, and plates and cups for six people. It is in nice condition.
Mrs F
A: This set is likely to date from the 1950s when motor travel was beginning to develop more widely and the idea of a day out in the car for a family picnic was very appealing to a new post war generation experiencing the freedom of the motor car. Sirram and another company called Brexton were the most popular mass manufacturers of these sets and complete examples in good useable condition are sought after today often by people who run old cars from the period and want them as a finishing detail. Most sets are priced between about £50 and £80, if in excellent condition.
