PENNINGTON missed the chance to go top of Division One of the BSF Over 35's football league this week, and had to settle for a share of the points.
Playing away at Breightmet United they twice went behind, however they battled back bravely but could not find the goal that would have sent them to the top of the table, and the match finished 2-2.
Stand Athletic also squandered a chance to move up to second spot as they were held to a 2-2 draw away at Turton. It was a close game and a draw was probably a fair result, which left Stand in third spot with Turton
fourth.
In Division Two Hare Athletic opened up a six point gap at the top with a 6-0 thrashing of Bolton Wyresdale, although Bolton were without their regular goalkeeper. A Paul Hill hat-trick did most of the damage, and he was aided by goals from Speight Whitter and A Parkinson.
At the bottom of the table Walkden Wrecks won the relegation battle with the Bay Mare Strollers who only have themselves to blame after squandering too many chances. The match finished 2-1 to Walkden, and the points move them up two places and out of the relegation zone. The Bay Mare are rooted to the foot of the table and looking at Third Division football next year.
In Division Three Rumworth & Hulton closed the gap on the top teams with a good 4-2 win at home to Dobbies C. Finely poised at 2-2 the match was won by two cracking goals from Killaran and Stuart Hamer, both of which were worthy of winning any match.
Old Smithillians moved up two places after a 5-0 demolition of the Founders Arms. Two goals a piece from H Cormican and G Hart formed the backbone of the win.
At the bottom Urmston MC moved off the foot of the table with a good 2-1 win away at Westhoughton Wingates.
In a re-arranged Sam Ashworth Trophy Second Round match Hayward Old Boys were convincing 5-1 winners away at the Bottom Bulls Head. A Chris Rothwell hat-trick and one each for Pomfret and Whelan secured a Quarter Final spot for Hayward.
All the other matches were lost to the weekends frosty weather.
