A PROGRAMME from Wanderers' 1929 FA Cup Final victory over Portsmouth fetched more than double the estgimated price at a Sotheby's auction.

The programme was valued at £500 before the sale, but an unnamed bidder paid £1,020 for it.

The victory completed a hat-trick of 1920s FA Cup wins for the Wanderers.

Meanwhile, a programme from Bury FC's 1903 FA Cup final win fetched more than £5,000.

Experts at Sotheby's had priced the item at £2,000, but were delighted when a bidding war drove the price to £5,520.

The eventual buyer, however, was from the Derby area rather than the North-west.

It is believed to be one of the most valuable Bury programmes ever.

Sotheby's spokesman Graham Budd said: "We are delighted that the programme has done so well.

"I had to be conservative in my estimate because it was so rare.

"There were no precedents to go by, as this was the first of its kind to go on sale."

He added: "Also because it had been clipped slightly, it was not in its original condition, so I had to be wary of that.

"It was an historic game because it produced the record score in a cup final."

Mr Budd said: "It went for more than we expected, which is always good."
