A TEENAGER had to be rescued when he lost control of his mountain bike and crashed onto a frozen pond.

Nicholas Burgoyne, aged 16, was cycling with two friends at Rivington Terrace Gardens when he spun out of control on steps and landed on the ice. Bolton Mountain Rescue and the Bolton north ambulance team carried out a joint operation to rescue Nicholas, from Worsley, who suffered a badly bruised leg.

Team leader of Bolton Mountain Rescue, Garry Rhodes, said: "He was lucky the pond was frozen because his injuries would have been a lot more serious otherwise."

Ten rescue members had to carry him up to a waiting ambulance at the top of the hill."

The temperature was only about 2c but the wind chill factor was about -5c and that saved him."

"We got there and the ambulance team were with him. A team of 10 rescue members had to carry him up to the waiting ambulance at the top of the hill.

"He was given pain-killing gas at the scene."
