A NOTORIOUS accident blackspot needs urgent safety measures before someone is killed, say local residents.

The junction of the A6 Blackrod by-pass with the B5408 Manchester Road has seen dozens of accidents, both minor and major, over the last 30 years.

And residents who have been campaigning for action fear will be killed before anyone at Bolton Council will listen.

Resident and Blackrod town councillor, Pat Barrow, of Eskdale Avenue, said: "How many more major accidents do we have to have before Bolton MBC carry out road improvements to this junction?

"No one is listening to us. We have been campaigning for this for 30 years and they have done a bit of work on it but accidents are still happening every week.

"It's a disgrace but someone has to be killed before anything will be done. A lot of residents want traffic lights but I think a roundabout, where traffic can flow freely, might be better."

Trafic queues from along Manchester Road, which is used by many people travelling from the Wigan area to Bolton, during rush hour.

Cllr Barrow said the main hazard was the size and positioning of a first bollard, because it blocks the indicators of cars travelling on the A6 from cars waiting to leave Blackrod.

Less than a fortnight ago three cars were involved in a crash.

One car ploughed into a fence and hedge after crossing a grass verge and footpath.
