A FOOTBALL fan from Bolton was fighting for his life in hospital today after being attacked by a gang of rival supporters.
The 47-year-old Manchester United supporter was with fellow fans after their team's clash with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
Police said they were attacked by a group of Bolton supporters as they stood on the platform at Chorley railway station, waiting to catch the train back to Bolton at 7pm.
"It was a savage, unprovoked attack," said Det Sgt Craig Thomas, of British transport police. The victim suffered severe head injuries after being punched and kicked and is currently in intensive care at an undisclosed hospital in a "serious" condition.
Two men were arrested and released on bail pending further inquiries.
Detectives are studying CCTV pictures from the station.
They are anxious to speak to any witnesses, in particular a group of about 15 Wanderers fans who had been drinking in Chorley pubs earlier in the evening.
Anyone with information should contact police on 0800 405040.
