Gore Vidal has long been one of the sharpest thorns in America's side so Dreaming War (Clairview, £9.95) ought to be essential reading.
And for the first 50-odd pages, it's sensational stuff.
Vidal asks uncomfortable questions and, despite some left unanswered and a considerably less-urgent second half, it is a striking and thought-provoking piece of polemic.
