BURY are poised to make another addition to their front line as the club continue to unearth a rich seam of teenage talent.
Manager Andy Preece is ready to table a contract for little known 19-year-old trialist Chris Porter after he netted twice in the reserve defeat to Walsall this week.
The young striker has yet to find his first club in senior football, despite impressing at recent trials with Blackpool and Wigan Athletic.
But Preece, who has already forged a successful partnership with Porter by setting up his two goals in midweek, reckons his latest find could have what it takes to join himself, Jon Newby, David Nugent and Colin Cramb in the first team's attacking armoury.
"He did very well. I'm very pleased with him," he said.
"He's been with us for about a month now and we are looking at the situation with interest.
"I set him up for his two goals - actually, I'd prefer it to be the other way around - but they still needed putting away and his finishing was very accomplished.
"He still needs to get a bit more aggression into his game but he's a quick runner with the ball at his feet and a really good prospect at just 19 years of age."
It has been an unusual route into professional football for Porter, with not even an academy appearance - let alone first team action - under his belt.
But Bury's scouting network is far reaching and appears to have found another sapling for Preece to cultivate.
"The lad's not played any competitive football, apart from for British Universities, but to not have that background and still do what he's done shows he's got great natural ability," said an enthusiastic Bury boss.
"We only found out about him through word of mouth. He had a month at Blackpool, then Wigan Athletic were reasonably interested before deciding not to give him a contract.
"Graham Barrow (Shakers' assistant manager) knows some of the staff at Wigan, who said he was worth a look and that's how we came to know about him. Having seen him, I think he's worth signing.
"Over the next week, we will look at our options. We can take him on a short term contract or maybe something a bit longer. That's down to the finances at the club but I'm hopeful something can be sorted out."
