FOUR men have been arrested in connection with an unprovoked attack on a Manchester United supporter which left him fighting for life.

They were detained after Tuesday's Bolton Evening News featured CCTV footage of a gang, believed to be Wanderers supporters, leaving the scene of the assault on the 47-year-old Bolton man at Chorley railway station.

The father-of-two is still in a serious condition in intensive care unit at an undisclosed hospital.

Identified only as Steve, for fear of reprisals, he was kicked and punched on the Preston-bound platform on Saturday at about 7pm following Wanderers' draw against United.

It is believed he went to Chorley with friends after the game at the Reebok Stadium and was making his way back to the station to get a train to Bolton when he was attacked.

The four men, who are all in their 40s and from the Bolton area, were arrested on Tuesday afternoon by British Transport Police.

They were interviewed by officers and released on bail pending further inquiries.

DS Craig Thomas said they were still looking for other people in connection with the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 0800 405 040.

He said: "The response from the public to the CCTV footage in the newspaper was excellent but inquiries are continuing to find other people who may have been involved in the attack."

The CCTV images show between 10 and 15 men climbing over the station wall into Clifford Street following the attack and walking off.
