REGARDING Ray White's letter of February 24.
Yet again we have a misguided, misinformed opinion put forward on this Letters page. Why on earth does Mr White think that the probable war with Iraq is to be waged with it's civilian population?
Let me just explain things in simple terms for not only Mr White, but also for Mr Pittock and the other 'peaceniks' who voice their anti-American views on this page.
We are not rushing headlong into another senseless war. Resolution 1441 has given Saddam Hussein's regime many months to comply with the wishes of the United Nations, not the USA acting alone, and still he plays his usual stalling tactics, the same tactics he has employed for the last 12 years.
Would UN inspectors have been allowed back into Iraq if the firm stance had not been taken by the USA? I think not. Any military action is in no way aimed at the ordinary Iraqi people, indeed ask any Iraqi exiles and they will tell you how welcome a regime change in Iraq would be, a regime change which can only be achieved by either the threat or the use of military action. UN sanctions have been proved to be unworkable and subject to manipulation.
If, as Mr White suggests, sanctions are lifted, what does he think Saddam Hussein will be buying? Not food and medicine, that's for sure since there are no restrictions on him buying these under the sanctions imposed already.
Being a realist, I accept that there will inevitably be civilian casualties -- that is the terrible consequence of war -- but they will be far less than the number slaughtered by Saddam's henchmen during his time in power.
How many innocent Iraqis have been gassed, tortured and executed, not to mention those that died in his war with Iran and invasion of Kuwait.
The USA, ourselves and ultimately the majority of the UN are going to rid the world of Saddam Hussein's evil regime before he is allowed to furnish terrorist groups with the weapons that will dwarf the events of September 11, 2001.
People like Mr White and the peace marchers are innocents in a wicked world, people who Lenin used to call "useful idiots". These people do not think that they are helping to maintain the torture chambers of Baghdad or the suicide bombers of tomorrow, but, sadly, they are.
