PHOENIX Nights star Dave Spikey stood accused of talking rubbish -- when he drove a giant motorised dustbin through the streets of Bolton
The comic was trying to encourage people to rethink the way they deal with their rubbish and the super-sized bin is the centrepiece of the campaign. At three metres high and 2.5 metres wide, it is the world's largest motorised bin.
Spikey, who is performing his stand-up show at the Bolton Octagon on Friday and plays Jerry 'The Saint' St Clair in Phoenix Nights, signed autographs and gave advice on which materials can be recycled.
Cllr Guy Harkin, Bolton Council's executive member for the environment, said: "Each year more than 146,000 tonnes of rubbish is thrown away from homes in Bolton -- that's the weight of 19,588 double-decker buses. "If placed end to end, these would stretch from Bolton to Birmingham." The Rethink Rubbish campaign is also being backed by Bolton steeplejack Fred Dibnah and antique specialist David Dickinson.
It is being managed by the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority in partnership with Bolton Council.
